On November 17th we listened to Rose Jacobs Gibson speak about her work over the years. She was on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors covering areas like Redwood City and Palo Alto. She has fought for things like affordable housing, health inequalities, and social justice. From her talk I got her website, hagarservicescoalition.org, which talks more about what she does to develop leaders in the world today. This includes initiative for Leadership Engagement and Development or iLEAD as she talked about in her speech. This is designed to stimulate greater civic participation locally and across the nation. It is like our "call to action day" where we get out and help those around us. I enjoyed her talk because I could personally relate to it and I would recommend the freshman seminar classes in the future listen to her as well.

Freshman conference
Last Thursday I attended the conference for the freshman seminar classes. Here we learned about the different projects that the other FYE classes had been working on. I got to learn about what the other freshman got to do on call to action day and how they liked it. Also they talked about the main focus of their class, which was fundraising for the non-profit company iLead. I found this interesting because it dealt with civic duties like my class does. It promotes helping out one's community almost like the ACLU does.
